We will regard sexuality in its historical context in an attempt to understand how the transformations of the understanding of sexuality have happened across time. We will both explore the history of sexology and we will explore expressions and framings of human sexualities through case studies, including literature, art and visual culture, hereby investigating how sexuality both explicitly and implicitly interacts with cultural products.  The course will address the implicated issues of human need and desire, fantasy and enjoyment, shame and repulsion, intimacy and love, and how these interrelated issues intersect with, amongst other things, aspects of gender, age, race, nationality, as well as with social and economic power interests.

Such an engagement with the multifaceted issue of sexuality will enable the student to explore and critique matters of sexuality in their historicity and socio-political significance broadly and, in turn, their more specific relevance for any one student’s particular discipline within the humanities.

The course will be taught by members of the research group Sexuality Studies.
